Earlier this week, Campus Crusade for Christ announced that our name will be changing to "Cru" in 2012.
After the announcement was made, there has been much negative reporting by national media outlets and accusations that we have dropped "Christ" from our name for fear of offending others and that we are backing away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This could not be further from the truth.
Let me first say that our name does not define our mission. Our mission remains the same, to take the good news of Jesus Christ everywhere.
The problematic words for our name in the U.S. were "Campus" and "Crusade". For decades, the word "Crusade" has been offensive to many and turned them off from even discussing Jesus with us. And, the word "Campus" is no longer an accurate description of the entire ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, and describes only a part of what our organization does. We didn't set out to remove the word "Christ".
We are not backing away from Jesus but rather moving toward those who need to hear the Gospel, more effectively in Jesus name.
