It has been a quiet summer on campus and most of the students we work with during the school year are living out of town or working full-time. But we still have had a great opportunity to meet a lot of incoming freshmen at UNO through New Student Orientation (which runs through August 4th).
With just four weeks from our first formal staff meeting of the year, I'm thankful for the chance to meet incoming students and to interact with other organizations during that time. Specifically, it has been a great chance to continue cultivating relationships with members of the Secular Student Alliance (the group who partnered with us in the "Skeptics Q&A Night").
It continues to be my experience in my interactions with atheists, that the majority have experienced some sort of hurt or pain from other Christians in some way. Building trust and the opportunity for further conversation comes in the form of much more than words, but positive interaction, listening, and understanding.
So as much as I'm thankful for the opportunity we have had to meet incoming freshmen, it has been a huge highlight to meet atheists on campus and engage in conversation with them, learn about their experience, and seek out practical ways to serve them.
