My parents took the boys for a couple days, while we had our home to ourselves. But, we quickly realized that with two nights free, how easy it is to just think about the kids. It takes some good intentionality and discipline amidst the freedom, but our time was spent well talking about various things, making decisions, and having fun.
I think a planning weekend is so valuable for us because, among other things, it allows us to:
1. Spend extended time talking about our vision
It's not everyday that we talk about our personal or ministry vision, nor should it be. But I think to revisit or address our vision every year is extremely important to know where we're going and to be on the same page.
2. Address our family needs
We talk about things like how the boys are wired and what their strength's are, and how we can build into them and develop them in their strength's. We also talk about us, and how we can better love & serve each other.
3. Have a lot of fun
We were able to do things that we really enjoy that we don't often get to do. This year we enjoyed sushi on an outdoor patio, a movie theater, long uninterrupted walks, wine tasting at a local vineyard, and we got to sleep in!
It's good for us to have a mix of some very intentional conversation and lots of fun, free from any distraction. Our weekend was very valuable for us and we definitely feel refreshed. And it's good to see the boys again too!

We am soo happy to have to you in Omaha so we can help you with the boys. They were so easy to care for and entertaining. ALSO....good for you to have some R&R time, no doubt about it.
