We are in the midst of "Hawk Week", which is a week of welcome back activities across campus leading up to the first day of class. This is a very crucial time of year to meet new students and develop friendships as we seek to point students to Christ.
On Sunday night we had an overnight retreat with our student leadership team, followed by a welcome back BBQ on Monday evening. The highlight for me was meeting E Lan, a student from China, at the BBQ. He was so amazed at the freedom we have in America and kept saying that we are "the land of the free". He even asked me at one point, "So you can talk about anything in public?" I am looking forward to being a friend to E and getting to know him more. It was such a visionary reminder to me of the awesome opportunity we have to share the gospel with students from all around the world, who will often return to their home country, hopefully with a desire to share the gospel with their family and peers.
Another key aspect of our week has been meeting new students by taking spiritual surveys. We use these surveys to follow up with these students by inviting them to our Bible studies and sharing the gospel with them. Students who filled out a survey were entered into a drawing for various prizes which we had donated to our ministry, highlighted by an iPod touch, an Osprey backpack, and Oakley sunglasses.

Neat! I love the story about E. Is he a believer? I will pray for him and for our country to continue to be a place where we can "talk about anything".
